JEFF HOLMES
DEAN OF ENGINEERING, THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM (UAB)
Jeff Holmes is the Dean of Engineering, Goodrich Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Medicine/Cardiovascular Disease, and Surgery/Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
He obtained his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in 1989, his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego in 1995, and his M.D. from the University of California, San Diego in 1998. His first faculty position was at Columbia University, where he helped found and build a new Biomedical Engineering department from 1999 to 2007. From 2007-2020, Dr. Holmes was a member of the Biomedical Engineering faculty at the University of Virginia, where he also served as founding Director of the Center of Engineering in Medicine, a $10M effort to foster collaboration between engineers and clinicians to improve prevention, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of disease.
His research uses computer models to help improve and personalize treatments for heart disease. His teaching interests include computer programming, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, biomechanics, physiology, and ethics. Dr. Holmes is a longstanding member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He served on the national ASME Bioengineering Division Executive Committee from 2014-2020 and as Chair of the Division from 2018-2019.

These awards recognize outstanding contributions and achievements within our engineering community, and we encourage all members to participate by submitting nominations.
The following categories are open for nominations:
Engineer of the Year: This award honors an engineer who has demonstrated exceptional expertise, leadership, and impact in their field.
Young Engineer of the Year: Recognizing the achievements of emerging talents in the engineering profession, this award celebrates a young engineer who has shown exceptional promise and accomplishments.
Engineering Educator of the Year: This award acknowledges the outstanding efforts of educators who have made a significant impact on the development and education of future engineers.
Distinguished Service Award: This prestigious award is presented to an individual who has rendered exemplary service to their nominating society and the engineering community at large.
Nominations will be accepted through close of business on Friday, November 15, 2024. To submit a nomination, please download and complete the nomination form from the links below. Submit the completed nomination form by email to awards@ecob.org or mail to ECOB Engineering Awards, P.O. Box 1153, Birmingham, Alabama 35201. We encourage you to consider your colleagues, mentors, and peers who have made remarkable contributions to our field.

The nomination form is divided into three sections: Personal Data, Nomination, and Authorization. While you are required to fill out all three sections, only the Nomination section will be submitted for judging.
